In 1996, just when the 3rd wave of ska was about to break open, the Blue Meanies had their chance to capitalize on a trend that would prove to rule the charts. Instead, the Blue Meanies took a stance against a watered down version of ska that critics and music lovers alike would call shallow, silly and meaningless. Full Throttle, on the other hand, became a collection of songs that would break the definition of ska wide open and leave listeners shocked at how far the envelope could be pushed.
Full Throttle is the ideal ska-punk record for people who hate ska-punk music. Blue Meanies sprang out of the "3rd Wave" of ska, true, but this record has little in common with the typical formula of catchy horns + off-beats + power chord sing-a-longs. Full Throttle is on its own parallel track, a proactive rage against the stale safety of that style. This is the sound of a band indulging its maniacal fanaticism for experimentation.
